چکیده

Tube models are very popular for the computational modeling of speech production. For nasals and nasalized vowels a minimum of two tubes is necessary to accurately model the spectral components of the speech signal. Typically, such models are estimated applying a polezero model as a first step and then estimate the tubes cross-sectional areas based on this model. Here, we introduce a method that estimates the tube areas without the necessity to estimate a pole-zero filter model. The algorithm is based on a variational Bayesian scheme under Gaussian assumptions. Probabilistic priors are used to enforce smoothness of the tubes. The method is tested on simulated data and results show that under strong smoothness prior the algorithm converges more reliably than an unconstrained method.

Vocal tract modeling in 3D

A three-dimensional model of the vocal tract is under development. The model consists of vocal and nasal tract walls, lips, teeth and tongue, represented as visually distinct articulators by different colours resembling the ones in a natural human vocal tract. The naturalness of the vocal tract model can be used in speech training for hearing impaired children or in second language learning, wh...

Voice conversion methods for vocal tract and pitch contour modification

This study proposes two new methods for detailed modeling and transformation of the vocal tract spectrum and the pitch contour. The first method (selective pre-emphasis) relies on band-pass filtering to perform vocal tract transformation. The second method (segmental pitch contour model) focuses on a more detailed modeling of pitch contours. Both methods are utilized in the design of a voice co...

Mixed-phase Speech Modeling and Formant Estimation, Using Differential Phase Spectrums

This paper introduces a new speech model, termed as the mixed-phase model, based on the assumption that the speech signal is produced by convolution of a maximum phase glottal excitation signal with a minimum phase vocal tract filter impulse response. The glottal excitation signal is assumed to be an anti-causal stable signal and the vocal tract filter is assumed to be causal and stable. For es...

Effects of Voice Therapy on Vocal Tract Discomfort in Muscle Tension Dysphonia

Introduction: Patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) suffer from several physical discomforts in their vocal tract. However, few studies have examined the effects of voice therapy (VT) on the vocal tract discomfort (VTD) in patients with voice disorders. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of VT on the VTD in patients with MTD.   Materi...

Improving Performance of Speaker Identification System Using Complementary Information Fusion

Feature extraction plays an important role as a front-end processing block in speaker identification (SI) process. Most of the SI systems utilize like Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), Perceptual Linear Prediction (PLP), Linear Predictive Cepstral Coefficients (LPCC), as a feature for representing speech signal. Their derivations are based on short term processing of speech signal and...

Segmentation and 3D reconstruction of the vocal tract from MR images – a comparative study

Speech production is an important human function involving a set of organs with specific morphological and dynamic aspects. The inter-speaker variability, the coarticulation or the nasality are some interesting aspects to improve a realistic 3D modeling of the vocal tract. For this, the understanding of the mechanism of speech production is crucial, as the current image data is not sufficient t...
